From Beijing, with an hour of flight we reach Datong, which between the 5th and 6th centuries AD was the first imperial capital of the Wei Kingdom of the North. At that time of maximum splendor, the most important local attraction dates: the fabulous caves of Yungang, an extraordinary masterpiece of Buddhist art, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Partly dug into the rock is also the spectacular Xuangkong Suspended Temple, another great wonder near Datong, a forced stage along the road leading to Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province. Another stop in Yingxian where is the Pagoda di Legno dei record, the oldest in all of China, since it dates back to 1056.
From Taiyuan we continue towards Pingyao, an extraordinary example of traditional Chinese city perfectly preserved. An architectural jewel practically intact, thanks also to the protection of mighty walls, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, where you can breathe all the charm and atmosphere of Imperial China.
