I finally made it and the last time I was passing to Rome I managed to go visit the MAXXI, the contemporary art museum designed by Zaha Hadid, where also the wrapping (besides the content) is a work of art. One of the reasons why I had not yet been able to visit it is its decentralized position, not really comfortable for those in the city of passage or for a few days.

It is really easy to reach, from Termini are a few metro stops to Flaminio, from which the tram n.2 takes you to your destination in a few minutes.

It was then a pleasant surprise to discover that for a few months the permanent collection of MAXXI is always exposed, in gallery 4 on the first floor, with free admission for everyone from Tuesday to Friday.

MAXXI – Works of the permanent collection

The exhibition, dynamic and immersive, puts the works in dialogue with each other and with the smooth spaces of the museum, and is organized in five thematic sections: Abstract geometry; Volume Summary; Fragments; Measure body; Outside interior. Among the works on display in the section Geometria Astrazione you can admire the impressive Without Title (Triplo Igloo) by Mario Merz, the geometries of Studies for a compact city by Franco Purini, the abstract watercolors of Lauretta Vinciarelli and the gold of Without Title by Gino De Dominicis.

The Volume Summary section includes the project by Renzo Piano for the Auditorium Parco della Musica (dominated at MAXXI by Piano) and the recently acquired work Istanbul City Hills by the young artist Margherita Moscardini, the sculptural geometries of Blood Sugar by Tony Cragg and the wise composition of the Hall for the papal audiences of Pier Luigi Nervi.

And right in Nervi is dedicated Architectures for sports, one of the great exhibitions of the summer, that until 2 October presents the projects for sports facilities from all over the world signed by the great Italian architect, from the Berta Stadium of Florence, to the works for the Olympics of Rome of 1960, up to the first multiracial sports plant in Cape Town, South Africa.

MAXXI – SUPERSTUDIO exhibition

Also on the subject SUPERSTUDIO. 50 years of Superarchitecture, which until September 4 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the foundation of one of the most influential groups of the world scene of the neo-avant-gardes of the 1960s and 1970s. On display there are over 200 installations, objects, graphic works, photographs, publications, covering the entire path and evolution of the group, coming largely from their archive and some never exhibited before. Enjoy it as a journey into space and time, images, architectures and even utopias of this phenomenal group.

Perhaps the most interesting exhibition of summer, at least in my modest opinion, is what I unfortunately did not see, because it had not yet been inaugurated at the time of my visit. This is about EXTRAORDINARY VISIONS. Italy pays tribute to the 70 years of the birth of the Italian Republic. The "extra-ordinary" visions are those of the great Italian and international photographers who have immortalized corners of Belpaese, including Luigi Ghirri, Gabriele Basilico, Mimmo Jodice, Franco Fontana, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Hiroshi Sugimoyo, Armin Linke, Jordi Bernadò, Massimo Vitali and others. It is open until 23 October and who knows, if it happens to pass from Rome in the coming months, maybe I will be able to see it.

During my stay in the capital I stayed atHotel Area Roma which is located at EUR, but is still a short walk from the Marconi metro and convenient to reach Fiumicino airport quickly. Surrounded by greenery, he has really spacious rooms, which have recently been renewed, therefore they are fresh and welcoming. The same applies to the lobby and breakfast room with a rich sweet and savoury buffet, where the day can only start in a good mood.
