In a few days we will be in May and, promptly, comes an exhibition that exhibits, for the first time in Italy, the photographs made by Philippe Gras (1942-2007) in Paris fifty years ago, during the days inflamed Sorbonne and surroundings. "In the heart of May 1968" – this is the title of the exhibition – you can visit for free until May 13 at CAMERA – Centro Italiano per la fotografia di via delle Rosine 18 in Turin.
The photographs were found in the archive of Philippe Gras after his death and the initiative of bringing them to Turin was by Fabrice Placet, director of the Alliance française commenting "the barricades of the Latin Quarter, the biggest strike in French history, the whole nation paralyzed by social movements: the May 1968 in France is, at fifty years of distance, a theme still able to offer opposing readings and arouse opposing passions".
In photos of Gras, taken during the occupation of the Sorbonne and the Odéon theatre, some of the protagonists of those days, from Jean-Paul Sartre, to Aimé Césaire, to Julian Beck. Philippe Gras debuted in the 1960s as a fashion photographer, then approached the world of music and the avant-garde theatre collaborating with magazines such as Actuel, L’Art Vivant and Jazz Hot.
On the occasion of the exhibition, Thursday 3 May at 19.00 at CAMERA will hold a meeting entitled "May ’68: a philosophical compendium for images" moderated by Nicolas Lozito, photoeditor de La Stampa.
