The Caribbean island of Barbados gives the best of itself in the summer season when the Crop Over Festival adds a sparkling bajan touch to a wonderful beach holiday and relax on the beautiful beaches between Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Barbados offers sheltered and quiet bays, such as Mullins Bay and Paynes Bay lapped by a turquoise and crystal clear sea, a lush nature to discover and a Bajan culture made of music, ancient traditions and lots of fun. In summer the island is a holiday with the addict Barbados Crop Over Festival, an event not to be missed that takes place throughout July. Colours, music and folklore animate the streets of the island for 5 weeks.
The origins of the festival date back to 1780, when Barbados was the biggest sugar producer to the world. At the end of the sugar cane harvesting season there was a big party celebrating the Crop Over, the end of the harvest. The celebrations began with the symbolic delivery of the last sugar cane to the King and Queen of the Festival, that is to say to the most productive man and the woman who had managed to cut the greatest amount of sugar cane of the season.
Today the festival is still celebrated, but with an extra touch of originality and extravagance: exciting the Grand Kadooment! that sanctions the end of the Crop Over Festival with a large and colorful parade in Caribbean costumes at the button rhythm of the calypso, with the popular dances bajan and so much, so much rhum.
