The Labyrinth of Masone, the largest in the world, took place in 2015 in Fontanellato (PR), thanks to the idea of Franco Maria Ricci – publisher, designer, art collector and libraries – and the promise made in 1977 to the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. Borges had always been fascinated by the symbol of the labyrinth, both in a metaphysical key and as a metaphor of the human condition. The Masone maze, conceived and designed by Ricci together with architects Pier Carlo Bontempi and Davide Dutto, represents the heart of a real and imaginary village at the same time.

Explore the Labyrinth
The Labyrinth of Masone is a cultural park that extends for eight hectares of lush vegetation at the gates of Fontanellato, in the heart of Po Valley. Inside the labyrinth, there are several structures that house art collections and books, as well as a Cafeteria, a Restaurant-Bistrò and a parmesan gastronomic space. All these places are curated by chef Andrea Nizzi and the staff of the 12 Monks. In addition, there are two luxurious suites where you can stay, giving a unique and evocative experience. 
Since its opening, the Labyrinth of Masone has become a place that offers spacious spaces, contact with nature and beauty, essential features that distinguish it. Although not all the labyrinths have a Minotaur, there are some who turn into gardens of delights, real eden in which you can lose and find in a timeless dimension, in total safety and tranquility.
A Labyrinth Inspired by History
The Masone Labyrinth is inspired by the ancient form of classical Roman labyrinths, but is reinterpreted by introducing blind alleys and alleys. The entire structure is made with bamboo plants, almost 300,000 in total, belonging to twenty different species.
These plants vary in height from 30 cm to 15 meters. The choice of bamboo as a main material is due to its characteristics: it is an evergreen, elegant, flexuous, vigorous plant and grows rapidly. Its ability to carry out high photosynthesis reduces carbon dioxide and provides large amounts of oxygen.
Through the intricate and charming green dash for over three kilometers, you can know, thanks to the information panels along the avenues, the whole history of the labyrinths. It will start from the myth of Crete, passing through the medieval and Renaissance period, until today.
The legacy of Franco Maria Ricci
Another path inside the labyrinth tells the story of his creator, Franco Maria Ricci. Through this experience, you can discover Ricci's passion for geology, caves and tunnels, as well as his encounter with Jorge Luis Borges.
It was in this place that Ricci promised Borges the realization of this immense work. Today, at the centre of the labyrinth, there is a pyramid-shaped chapel that symbolizes the bond between labyrinths and faith. This chapel can serve as a place for weddings and classical music concerts.
Museum, Library and Publishing House
The Masone Museum houses the vast art collection of Franco Maria Ricci, which includes about four hundred works including paintings, sculptures and art objects. This collection fully reflects the eclecticism of the collector, ranging from the works of the 17th century and the neoclassical style to the still lifes of the Napoleonic era, from romantic painting to popular painting of the nineteenth century.
Works of great artists coexist with those of minor or popular artists in an exhibition that exploits harmonious associations. The Museum also offers space for temporary exhibitions in three spacious rooms.
During the visit, you can admire and consult numerous books, including those printed by Franco Maria Ricci. In addition, in the rooms of the Museum are exhibited some of the most significant editions printed by Giambattista Bodoni, as well as editions of another important exponent of the Italian libraries, Alberto Tallone. This collection is one of the largest and most complete among private ones.
Luxury Restaurants and Suites
The restaurant, run by the Nizzi family and the staff of the 12 Monks since autumn 2021, occupies an entire area in the first court of the Labyrinth. The cuisine of chef Andrea Nizzi combines tradition and innovation, mixing the flavors of traditional Parma Sunday lunches with the most modern cooking and preservation techniques.
The Bistrò is the ideal option for a quicker and more dynamic break. In the shop, you can buy excellent selected food and wine products, strictly related to the territory.
Finally, in the Labyrinth two luxurious suites were set up, furnished with decorations, works of art and refined furniture. Each suite consists of a private living room, a bedroom and two spacious bathroom.
