Sleep in a Rascard: A Journey to Time
Staying in a "rascard" means travelling over time while enjoying all moderate comforts. At 1,800 meters of altitude, the contemporary and the ancient meet. Once you cross the threshold of these historical buildings, you can perceive the history through the still intact woods and the typical stones of the Ayas Valley, along with the objects that tell the activities and alpine accessories of the time lived in these places.
The village has Walser origins, a population that in 1300, coming from the Canton Valais in Switzerland and fleeing for religious reasons, initially settled in the area of Val Sesia, and then settled in Gressoney in the nearby Lys Valley, and finally here, in the Val d’Ayas, in the area surrounding the Evancon stream. The village of Mascognaz was inhabited from 1300 until the early 1500s, and then, around 1700, until the fifties of the twentieth century.
The Walser villages stand out for the characteristic type of construction. They are famous for their Rascard or Stadel, buildings that have a dry masonry base used as a stable, while on the upper floor are the bedrooms.
Once, on the top of these Rascards were the "lobbies", i.e. the loggias, spaces for the conservation of hay and food to be aged like cold meats and cheeses. Typically, each loft also housed the Rahtelés, wooden constructions with different sections, used to dry the bread, which was produced once or twice a year, at the end of the crops, and baked in the bakery of the Village, still preserved in Mascognaz. In each village, the inhabitants worked to self-produce all food and clothing, and often practiced the barter of such products with other villages.
