The Vasari Corridor: Florence's Hidden Renaissance Masterpiece

A journey suspended between the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti, to discover the most hidden and fascinating Florence.

There is a Florence that everyone knows: Piazza della Signoria, il Duomo, Ponte Vecchio. And then there is another, more secret, which is revealed only to those who can look for it. In this private Florence there is the Corridor Vasariano, a suspended path that seems out of a historical novel, reopened to the public after eight years of waiting.

The dream of a Grand Duke

It was the year 1565 when Cosimo I de’ Medici, the powerful Grand Duke of Tuscany, decided that to move from the seat of power – Palazzo Vecchio – to its private residence – Palazzo Pitti – it was not enough to cross the city on foot or by carriage. It needed something more: a safe passage, away from the looks and dangers of crowded roads. The task was entrusted to Giorgio Vasari, court architect and undisputed master of the Renaissance.
In just five months a unique work was born: a corridor raised 750 meters long that departed from the Uffizi, crossed Ponte Vecchio, touched the church of Santa Felicita and ended in the gardens of Boboli, behind Palazzo Pitti.

A path between art and legend

The Vasarian Corridor is not only a physical connection: it is a thread that sews together the symbolic places of Florence, woven art, politics and legend. It is said that, in order to make the path more elegant, Cosimo I transferred the barrels of the butchers that once populated Ponte Vecchio, replacing them with goldsmiths and jewelers. The result? Still today, the bridge is a glittering showcase of gold and precious stones.
Another curiosity wants that along the corridor the Grand Duke had built tiny windows to observe the city without being seen, a privilege that now visitors can share, overlooking glimpses that look like live postcards.

The silent witness of history

During the Second World War, when the Nazis blew up all the bridges of Florence except Ponte Vecchio, the Vasarian Corridor remained standing, damaged but intact. For days it was the only way to cross the city from north to south. Today, walking through its walls, we perceive that dense silence that belongs to the places that have seen centuries pass and destinies.

The return of a hidden masterpiece

After closing in 2016 for important restoration and safety work, the Vasarian Corridor has returned to shine. The route was restored to its original forms, respecting the vision of Vasari and the Renaissance atmosphere.
Entering the Uffizi, it is wrapped with a feeling of intimacy: terracotta floors, sober walls, soft lights. It slowly progresses, almost at the tip of foot, between works of art and unexpected views. You pass over the heads of passersby, you cross secret rooms, you touch the Tower of the Mannelli, overlooks the Arno.
Then you enter the church of Santa Felicita, where a private balcony allowed the Medici to attend Mass without descending among the faithful. The last section leads to Palazzo Pitti, and from there the Gardens of Boboli, a green stretch that seems suspended over time.

Each window gives a unique perspective: the flowing Arno, red roofs, medieval towers, hills in the distance. It is Florence that you can not see from the crowded sidewalks, but that you can only admire from here, suspended between heaven and stone.
