Mauritius rum and Rhumerie
Yeah, because Mauritius is a real paradise for rum admirers, the most typical local product for sale practically everywhere, and the visit to one of the six rhumerie present is a must for a stay on the island.
Mauritius rum agricultural
If you want to discover the true, authentic agricultural crops, avoid industrial distilleries and aimed at one of the three craft productions. The difference is not small: the first ones in fact produce traditional rhum from the molasses, while the second ones get the final product through fermentation and distillation of sugar cane juice.
Rhumerie de Chamarel
During my trip to Mauritius I visited the Rhumerie de Chamarel, nestled in a green valley in the south of the island. Nestled in a vast plantation, the Rhumerie de Chamarel is one of the few still in activity to cultivate its own sugar cane. The collection is carried out by hand between July and December and the transport in distillery takes place within 4 hours.
The visit has its charm even from a panoramic point of view: the Maurtian architect Maurice Giraud has created a building that blends harmoniously with the spectacular surroundings. Finally, a delicious restaurant allows you to enjoy the Maurtian flavors more calmly.
On arrival, instead of the classic aperitif (it was about lunch time) we served the tray you see above, with all you need for Ti’Punch: lime, cane sugar, ice and of course agricultural rhum, the specialty of the house. So it is used in Mauritius: each gives the ingredients of his drink according to the taste and inspiration of the moment.
During the visit, which winds between copper alembics and distillers, the various phases of the production cycle are illustrated, with a great final tasting of the awarded rum of the house.
Lfamous distillery is just one of the many attractions of the town of Chamarel, that stands on a plateau in an area of great landscape and cultural charm. Do not miss, in the area, a stop at the lands of the Seven Colors of Chamarel, curious trace of origin
volcanic and geological history of the island, and spectacular waterfalls that dive from 83 meters high.
Aventure du Sucre
This interesting interactive museum was created by the conversion of an old sugar factory. It is located inside the Beau Plan estate, near the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden.
The visit is a fascinating thematic path that tells the story of sugar cane and its derivatives, which in addition to sugar, also includes rum.
The museum shop offers tastings and has a section dedicated to the House of New Grove range, which offers amber rum, exotic liqueurs flavored with coffee, vanilla and honey and rum with special sugars (melassa, demerara and golden bakery).
Also here, there is the possibility of a pleasant lunch break based on Mauriziane specialties at the museum restaurant.
Domaine de Labourdonnais
This site is a treasure trove for lovers of history, culture and gastronomy. It has a real jewel of the Maurtian heritage: the castle of Labourdonnais.
The building was built in 1856 and is surrounded by a large lush garden, where you can spot giant turtles, and orchards, from which the raw materials are collected for the production of 100% Mauriziane delicacies.
In addition to jams, pasta, and fruit juices, Labourdonnais can not miss the rum, made in white and amber varieties by the homonymous distillery. All these products can be tasted at the end of the visit and bought in the castle boutique, or taste directly at the restaurant La Table du Château.
